概要 | Refineries, Chemical producers as well as bioprocess industries have been a driving force behind the development of process automation technologies. The primary promise of process automation is the capability to deliver incremental gains in capacity and/or efficiency without the need for costly equipment upgrades, while inherently making processes safer. This is also the case at the advanced regulatory layer of process control, where concepts such as Industry 4.0 and technologies based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) promise noticeable improvements in performance in comparison to the traditional and established fundamental/knowledge-based control structures such a model predictive control (MPC). The objective of this talk is to put these two general trends of ANN and model based control into perspective by taking a “helicopter” view of their current states and inherent limitations, while focusing on specific practical industrial examples. Building on these findings, a future perspective of these two general trends will be given, including projects currently underway at DTU PROSYS and BIOPRO Strategic research consortium to counter some of these limitations identified. The talk will be concluded by briefly looking at how a systems thinking approach can be used to find the best value proposition when implementing control solutions and analysing other emerging process control technologies. |
